The faction-based society that Tris Prior once believed in is shattered—fractured by violence and power struggles and scarred by loss and betrayal. So when offered a chance to explore the world past the limits she’s known, Tris is ready. Perhaps beyond the fence, she and Tobias will find a simple new life together, free from complicated lies, tangled loyalties, and painful memories.
But Tris’s new reality is even more alarming than the one she left behind. Old discoveries are quickly rendered meaningless. Explosive new truths change the hearts of those she loves. And once again, Tris must battle to comprehend the complexities of human nature—and of herself—while facing impossible choices about courage, allegiance, sacrifice, and love.
Warning Sweetie there will be tons of spoilers. Do not attempt to read this review if you have not read the two previous books and also this book.

Also the wave on the cover represents the ocean of tears of our fandom. Just saying. This book is one of the saddest that I have read lately. Veronica Roth showed me the possibility of a happy ending then ripped it away leaving me in a mess in my ocean of tears.
Okay let me pull myself together... Okay okay.... you can do this Madison it's just a book....a book with tons of feels....Anyway I can do this....I will do this! Okay Allegiant starts out with where Insurgent left off but it kinda had me lost in the beginning until I remembered what had happened in Insurgent. So first I was like this....
Anyway I finally caught on what was going on. They were having the same problem with the factionless that they had within the factions. Another leader wanted to lead them and they did not want to be lead. So a war between the "Allegiant" and the factionless began. Several of the "Allegiant" including Tris, Tobias, Uriah, and Christina head out on a mission to go beyond the fence. They make it out only losing one of their group when she dies by getting shot. I can't remember her name at the moment. Anyway it was sad anyway...but nothing of the pain to come.
Well they get outside the fence and they find that their city is just one of many genetic experiments looking for those who are "Divergent" or in reality "genetically pure". They think that any person that isn't genetically pure is flawed and doomed to fail by repeating the past history of violence, war, and famine. Lovely thoughts right? Then Tobias finds out that he's not Divergent after all and that makes him think he's damaged... Curse you Roth! Hurting my Tobias like that!
Well Tobias gets in a group with the genetically damaged people at the headquarters and agrees to turn off the security for them. He wasn't aware what they were going to do... They placed explosives around the compound and blew out several sections of wall in order to get to the death serum. Caught in this blast was Uriah....My favorite next to Tobias. When this happened my dog was laying on my feet as I read and I literally yelled "NO! NO! NO! nononono...." then proceeded to cry. I went from this.....
to this...except with tears.
I kept on reading hoping that somehow he would come out of it. He never did because he was basically brain dead after the explosion. Anyway I must keep on. I kept on reading and discovered the worst was yet to come. Tobias and Tris find out that the genetically pure people are going to use the memory serum on their city. In order to get to the memory serum to use it against them someone has to go through the death serum (its like a mist) and no one has ever survived. Caleb (Tris' brother) volunteers out of guilt to do this.
Oh Tris and Tobias make up after being mad at each other over Tobias going along with the GDs. "Makeup" yeah you know what I mean. Yeah these guys do. Yep it's exactly what you think. Commence fangirling.
On their way to get the memory serum Tris and Caleb are ambushed and Tris continues to the room on her own where she survives the death serum. The bad guy David is waiting for her inside. He is determined to do this because he thinks it is the only way and will do anything to carry it through. This is where my nail biting started.
Tris jumps for the memory serum and two gunshots go off. This book is told by two different perspectives. Tris and Tobias. After the end of that chapter the rest of them just had Tobias above them....I was going no. surely not. She can't do that. no.....and I started crying again.
They later tell Tobias what happened and he completely shut down for awhile...He couldn't believe she was dead and was so upset. I couldn't believe Roth did that to him and I started bawling.....She died and he was so devastated....They did end up fixing the city and the headquarters but Tobias was so upset after it happened he almost drank the memory serum to forget all the pain of losing Tris. My poor sweet Tobias!
At the end of the book, I had a severe book hangover (the inability to recover from the feels of a book, unable to move on after a series is over). This describes me exactly.
and this one too.
I still loved this book just not as much as the first two.
I give it a 4 out of 5 stars
4 out of 5 kisses for Romance
4 out of 5 serums for Violence
